The edition guide

A closer look.

Cousins Beach becomes a visual narrative in this adaptation of the first Summer novel. Jenny Han receives the original-author credit, Cynthia Yuan Cheng and Arielle Jovellanos adapt the story, and Sara Faber supplies the illustrations.

Why return to this book?

Readers can compare how dialogue, gesture and visual pacing convey a familiar relationship story. It also offers a different entry point for readers who prefer sequential art to the original prose format.

About the original work

Jenny Han’s 2009 novel follows Belly’s return to Cousins Beach and the changing meaning of her relationship with the Fisher brothers. The graphic edition adapts that first novel; it is not the next prose installment.

Where it belongs in the series

The publisher calls this book one of the graphic series and identifies its source as the first novel. That numbering does not make it a fourth original Summer novel.
