Why it is on our radar
Vale James combines body horror with the unstable loyalties of three friends. The lake-house setting and fungal threat give this adult debut a concrete hook beyond a general promise of summer scares.
About the book
Chloe, Dani and Lex rent a cheap lakeside house for a post-graduation escape, carrying unresolved attraction and jealousy with them. After a swim leaves Lex with a rapidly decaying wound and Dani returns from a hookup altered, Chloe tries to protect a friendship that something hungry is physically consuming.
